Statement

raphael thierry all error
I do what I can. I always try to start from scratch and satisfy my curiosity. I learn from failure and I am aware that I know very little. I believe in knowledge gained through practice. I want to ask questions and explore, not get answers or find anything. The artwork comes first. It does what it wants. The artwork emerges by itself.

I deeply believe that the artwork speaks out, just like music speaks out. But it’s not about language. I think it’s not even about communicating anything. It’s about escaping communication, which demands effort. Perhaps, over a lifetime. Here is my quest, tending towards that freedom.

Variety of approaches

raphael thierry all error
My aliases have grown throughout my practice. They have been there since the beginning and imposed themselves to me by their different approach and point of view. It started as a game in which they became the rules. They help me organize and stimulate my practice. Raphael is in the eye, he questions reality. Klaus is in the gesture, he questions abstraction. Paolo is in the mind, he questions the process. But in their practice, the borders are porous. Nothing is fixed.

Raphaël

Under my surname, I question reality and its interpretation. The intention does not lie in the desire to represent or figurate the real, but in the search for its evocation, its incarnation by and in matter, in search of a completely different reality: that of the artwork itself. So I rely initially on my perception of reality [ what I see and which stimulate the desire to do ] in order to immerse myself in the process of transfiguration offered by matter and thus explore its field of possibilities.

Klaus

With Klaus Ramka it’s the relation to the abstract form that I explore. The search by the gesture of a writing freed from the relation with reality. Expand the field of possibilities from a single sign. Klaus Ramka’s vision is based on a single abstract form he calls totem. Originally rectangular shape that evokes schematically the features of a mask: two eyes, a nose, a mouth. The principle of his pictorial practice rests mainly on his serial aspect: the same pattern repeated to infinity in the most varied forms and techniques. It’s in the game and the exploration of these variations that he deploys his formal universe.

Paolo

In the case of Paolo Cari, everything starts with an idea, an intuition or a questioning before any action. His practice is to rely on an activity of the mind, by essence intangible, to lead to a physical reality, without premeditation of form or process and focus the attention on the drifts and mutations that take place in the progression from one towards the other. It is therefore how starting from an idea, generate an object or an artwork. Unlike my other two approaches, the particularity of this one involves always the elaboration of a new way of working specific to each project both in its technical aspect as in its method. This approach certainly stems from my fascination for the study of the mechanisms in the artistic creation process.
